How to Make Tanghulu

Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese snack that consists of skewered fruits coated in a hardened sugar syrup. It is not only visually appealing but also deliciously sweet and tangy. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making tanghulu at home.

To make tanghulu, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Fresh fruits (such as strawberries, grapes, or apples)
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Skewers

1. Prepare the fruits:

Wash and dry the fruits thoroughly. If using strawberries, remove the stems and leaves. For grapes, separate them into small clusters. If using apples, cut them into bite-sized pieces.

2. Skewer the fruits:

Take the skewers and carefully thread the fruits onto them. Make sure to leave some space between each fruit to ensure even coating.

3. Make the sugar syrup:

In a saucepan, combine equal parts of sugar and water. For example, if you use 1 cup of sugar, add 1 cup of water. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely.

4. Coat the fruits:

Once the sugar syrup is ready, dip each skewered fruit into the syrup, making sure to coat them evenly. Allow any excess syrup to drip off before placing the skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

5. Let it harden:

Allow the tanghulu to cool and harden at room temperature for about 30 minutes. This will give the sugar syrup enough time to solidify, creating a crunchy coating.

Making tanghulu at home is a fun and rewarding experience. With just a few simple steps, you can create a delightful snack that will impress your family and friends. Whether you choose strawberries, grapes, or apples, the combination of sweet and tangy flavors will surely satisfy your taste buds. So why not give it a try and enjoy the deliciousness of homemade tanghulu?
