Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder, which causes recurrent seizures in a patient and can affect people of all age group. Topiramate, which is also called Topamax is a commonly used drug for controlling seizures. The drug does not have any adverse effect on children or adults.

However, it is important to follow the doctor’s advice and take the drug as per the prescription. Any kind of alteration with the dosage can lead to side-effects.

Side-effects of topiramate
Almost every prescription pill comes with side-effects and Topamax is also not an exception. Patients, who take this drug to treat the epileptic seizures   often complain of unprecedented sickness, dizziness, sleepiness or excess fatigue. Some also experience problems like diarrhea, depression, weight loss or tingling sensation. Though rare, nose and throat problems are also experienced at times. In most of the cases, the conditions are healed naturally and do not require further medical assistance. However, for any other side-effects than mentioned above, patients must consult doctors.

Pregnant women should avoid taking these medicines as it may cause an adverse effect on the fetus. To cope up with the sleepiness or fatigue problems, it is recommended to take the medicine every day during the night. In case, you have missed a pill, take it as soon as you remember. It is essential to provide the complete medical history of the patient before starting with Topamax dosage, as it might not be safe for all.

Though Topamax a commonly used drug for this condition, you just cannot get it over the counter. Patients getting signs of epilepsy should be admitted to a hospital emergency immediately and diagnosed for the problem. All seizures might not be related to epilepsy. So, do not take a medicine without a diagnosis, as it may lead to fatal consequences.
