A brief overview of scalp psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is a very common skin disease that is infected and is spread around the forehead, behind ears, nose sides, or back of the neck and is identified by scaly, reddish patches. Sometimes psoriasis would be there only on the scalp and not on other areas of the skin.

Scalp psoriasis that is caused can be any kind, from mild to severe and it can be different from person to person. It is not an epidemic disease. Scalp Psoriasis is formed due to the lack of strength of the immune system (one of the reasons), which is why it leads to an increased growth of the skin cells which grow quickly and turn into patches.

One can also get it if anyone in the family has it, that is, it is genetic. The most common kind is the chronic plaque psoriasis which can spread over the body including the elbow, knees, scalp, and back. The rest-affected area could be more specific like legs or areas like where the skin and finger touch. Apparently, 50 percent of people have chronic plaque psoriasis.

Symptoms of mild scalp psoriasis may be fine scaling and slight and moderate to severe includes; dry scalp, itching, soreness, hair loss, bumpy patches, and dandruff flakes. Most research says that scalp psoriasis itself doesn’t lead to hair loss.

Due to the irritation, if one scratches on and at the scaly spots very hard or harshly, that’s when it leads to hair loss. The stress alone leads to temporary hair loss.

If any of these symptoms are experienced, it is recommended to consult with a dermatologist or doctor.  Through this skin biopsy test, they can define the conditions clearly.

Mostly, scalp psoriasis or dry scalp treatments are done with topical corticosteroid medication. Other topical medications include:

  • Vitamin-D
  • Coal tar shampoo
  • Retinoids
  • Anthralin

The topical medication scalp psoriasis might be difficult to use alone. Hence, there could be prescribed lotions gems, foams, liquids, or sprays that can be treated in other parts of the body.

However, there is no permanent scalp psoriasis treatment and dry scalp treatment available. Living with scalp psoriasis is hard, but it can be controlled and can be prevented from further growth. People who follow regular methods of dry scalp treatment rarely get psoriasis again or for a longer time.
