4 common skin problems and ways to deal with them

Almost all of us face skin problems at some point in our lives which can make us feel uncomfortable. Skin problems can be either permanent or temporary, but fortunately, most of them can be treated. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before you think about treating them yourself. That said, let’s check out some common skin conditions in men and women and how they can be treated.

Acne

Acne is the most prevalent skin disorder among adolescents and one of the major causes of anxiety and frustration. However, acne can affect adults too. It commonly appears on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back.

It occurs as a result of the blockage of hair follicles with oil, dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria.

There are several creams and medications to treat acne. These medications usually contain ingredients that remove excess oil from your skin and kill bacteria. However, it’s best to visit a dermatologist to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. If left untreated, acne can leave permanent scars and dark spots on your skin.

Sunburn

Sunburns are painful. They occur if you’ve exposed yourself to ultraviolet rays from sun or sunlamps for a long time. How much time should one limit their exposure to the sun is hard to say, even with sunscreen protection.

Sunburn turns your skin red, wrinkly, and itchy.

If you’re sunburned, the first thing you need to do is go back to your hotel or home and take a cold shower with a mild soap. After the shower, immediately moisturize your skin with a light, oil-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel and drink plenty of water. You can also take some medications in case of swelling or extreme discomfort. It’s advisable to see a doctor if you develop severe blisters on most parts of your body.

Cellulite

Cellulite can appear in both men and women, but it mostly affects women. They are like dimples that appear on the belly, butt, and thighs. Cellulite can be genetic or result due to aging. Leading an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle can also increase the chances of developing cellulite.

It’s difficult to get rid of cellulite completely at home. However, regular cardio and strength training exercises can help them disappear to some extent. Some caffeine and retinol-based creams could help make your skin look tighter. If you see no improvement with these methods, you can visit a doctor. Doctors typically recommend undergoing laser treatment to improve the appearance of cellulite, or may recommend you to try liposuction, acoustic wave therapy, radiotherapy, and others.

Stretch marks

The unappealing stretch marks can make it hard to feel good in a bathing suit. These are long, narrow lines that develop on belly, thigh or areas where the person might have gained weight quickly. It mostly happens due to weight gain, rapid growth in puberty, or during pregnancy.

Getting rid of stretch marks is not easy. The treatment is costly and not always effective. Certain creams, gels, lotions and cosmetic surgeries are available to treat the marks, but none of them is backed by medical evidence. That said, you can still try using creams, lotion, and some home remedies. If the marks don’t seem to improve, fix an appointment with a dermatologist to get treatment options.
